What an AI avatar changes at the bedside

A consistent face and voice turns a clinical robot from equipment into presence. Notes from ward trials on triage, medication rounds and rehabilitation coaching.

Equipment versus presence

A robot arm in a ward is equipment. The same platform with a photoreal avatar, a steady voice and the patient's own language is presence — and patients respond to presence very differently.

In ward trials the avatar layer changed engagement most in three places: overnight triage questions patients would not press a call button for, medication rounds where the same face returns every time, and rehabilitation coaching that needs patience no human rota can sustain.

The specialist behind the face

The avatar is not a replacement for a clinician. It is the interface a remote clinician appears through. A specialist anywhere in the world can take direct control of the unit's instrument arms, with sub-20ms haptic feedback and hard motion limits enforced on the robot itself.

Between sessions

The economics work because the same platform is not idle between clinical sessions. It runs ward logistics autonomously — samples, linens, consumables, equipment — on the identical control stack.
